The Light of the East
¡¡¡¡Standing on the open circle-island at the inter-junction of the Century Boulevard and Yanggao Road, 'the Light of the East' has the large-sized square and the Century Garden as its background. With the sundial as the mold, the sculpture is made of stainless steel tubes, forming up the structure of a complex and exquisite net rack. Twenty meters in vertical height, the metal sculpture looks both magnificent and delicate, though attractive, not blocking the sight lines of passersby and vehicles. The sundial makes people associate it with the remote history. With the upper part small and the lower part large, the elliptic dial plate symbolizes the earth. The middle point, passed by the dial pointer, represents China. In the mean time, the whole model of the sculpture looks like some kind of the high-tech satellite antenna. Because of the measurement of astronomers, the sundial pointer points the true north direction and has the timing function. It is considered according to experts that this is the first good-sized urban sight sculpture in the country with so fine combination of the modern architecture language and the high-tech language nowadays. The originality of 'the Light of the East' is from the French designer Mr. Charpentier. Designed by Beijing young sculptor Zhong Song, the good-sized sight sculpture 'the Light of the East' was made by Beijing Chinese Shenya Sculpture Company Ltd. With symbolism as the core (using the time changes in one day to express the theme of time), the design aims to give prominence to the theme of the important crossing-centuries time. With the art function as the core, the sculpture also has the assistant function of counting time. During the creation of the sculpture, Experts Yang Yude and Zhao Gang etc. from Shanghai Observatory Station of the Chinese Science Academy provided great support in the astronomical fields of determining directions and angles. The modern construction language has been applied to the creation of the sculpture skillfully. This sculpture works has won the approvals of the appraisal experts from various major fine arts academies of the whole country.
